ACORN

We have been walking in a Winter Wonderland in Acorns this half term. We started by looking for signs of Winter and visiting our favourite tree to notice how it had changed. We all noticed that there were no leaves and we could see straight up to the clouds. Some of the children noticed that there were birds nests high up in the trees.

We had a great time both in school and at home when it snowed. Lots of us made snowmen and used our subitising skills to talk about the footprints we could see in the snow. We went for snowy walks and explored the world around us.

We found out about animals that hibernate and we made dens and caves for them.

The children in Acorns decided that it was time for us to look after the birds too so we made bird feeders to hang in our gardens at home and also in our Early Years garden.

Just before half term we learnt the Nursery Rhyme, the Queen of Hearts as it was coming up to Valentines Day. Lots of the children made their own jam tarts and made crowns to wear to our Royal Banquet on Teams on the last day of half term.

WILLOW

For the first half of the Spring Term, we have been learning about Structures. We have learned:

  • to construct a variety of playground equipment
  • to use plans we have made to build our own playground equipment
  • to evaluate our plans and finished pieces

We have also learnt about animals including humans. We have learnt:

  • to sort animals into 5 categories
  • to identify and sort animals according to their diets
  • to label the human body and identify how we use our 5 senses

In PSHE we have been looking at our dreams and goals and the steps we need to take to achieve them.  In maths we have learnt about division, compared numbers and used different strategies to add and subtract. We also celebrated a faith day as a whole school, looking at the main beliefs in Christianity.

Due to the national lockdown, some of us have been working remotely from home, and some of us have been working in school. This has not stopped us achieving great things!!

For the second half of term, we will be looking at changes within living memory, focussing on music, transport and toys.

MAPLE

For the first half of the Spring Term, we have been learning about ancient Greeks. We have learned:

  • to use sources of evidence to ask and answer questions about life in Ancient Greece
  • to use a timeline to sequence events
  • to describe Ancient Greek society and what is was like to live then
  • how Ancient Greek life has impacted on modern day

We have read lots of ancient Greek myths, and even had a go at writing one of our own. We have used ancient Greek vases as inspiration to develop our drawing skills in art, while in PSHE we have been looking at overcoming challenges to achieve our dreams and goals.  In maths we have focussed mainly on multiplication and division, improving our times table knowledge and developing efficient written methods. We also celebrated a faith day as a whole school, looking at the main beliefs in Christianity.

Due to the national lockdown, some of us have been working remotely from home, and some of us have been working in school. This has not stopped us achieving great things!!

For the second half of term, we will be looking at food, how it grows, where it comes from around the world, and following recipes to cook healthy meals. This knowledge organiser explains in more detail what we hope the outcomes will be:

OAK

For the first half of the Spring Term, Oak class have been learning about the Vikings. We have learned:

  • Who the Vikings were, where they came from and when they came to Britain.
  • About the different Anglo-Saxon Kings and what their time of reign was like.
  • What Viking life was like, including what crimes and punishments were like at the time.

We have been working hard at writing for a range of different purposes by learning the features of formal and informal letters and we have created our own formal and informal letters too.

In Science we have been working hard and learning about the eight different development phases of humans and we have learned about different gestation periods between different animals-which has been interesting!

PSHE has been another main area of learning where we have been thinking carefully about dreams and ambitions for the future. We have been focusing on steps we can take now to be able to achieve long terms dreams and goals in the distant future.

In maths we have been learning about how to multiply, subtract and add fractions, completing short division sums, and we have been learning properties of shapes in particular polygons! There have been some extremely tricky challenges, but we have been learning to show our calculations (step by step) to derive the correct answers.

Due to the national lockdown, some of us have been working remotely from home, and some of us have been working in school. This has not stopped us achieving great things!!
